OSU East Regional Chiller Plant
East Regional Chiller Plant • The Ohio State University • Columbus, Ohio • Leers Weinzapfle Associates & GBBN
Also known as the North Campus Chiller Plant, the OSU East Regional Chiller Plant is a critically important large infrastructure facility sitting along High Street (the main thoroughfare through campus) and not only preserves the first Ohio State football field green space, but also frames the gateway for a new campus entry. Two offset volumes create the composition of this modulated structure: a lower, glazed rectangular volume with semi-transparent view and an upper lifted square volume with perforated metal walls of copper colored, coated aluminum that provides a cost-effective water cooling tower enclosure. The upper screened volume contains the cooling towers, while the lower, glass enclosed section houses the chillers. To minimize mass, the pumping equipment is located in the basement of the building. The chiller plant is targeted for LEED Gold Certification.
