Details in Contemporary Architecture: As Built

We've discovered our images have been featured in 'Details in Contemporary Architecture: As Built'! You can view our work of the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business on pages 188-197 as well as the technical drawings. Generally we only see the buildings in their finished state and it's very interesting to see how our images match up to the architects original drawings!

Becton Dickinson featured in Landscape World

LandscapeWorld.jpg

Becton Dickinson, which Brad photographed way back in the spring of 2008, has just recently been featured in Landscape World, a Korean Design magazine. The article covers the way that RMJM Hillier was able to solve the company's problem of having two separated buildings that house R&D and Business Administration; the separation of which created two entirely separate corporate cultures. To unite both parts of the company the architects decided to create a large, mostly subterranean, cafeteria and commons facility. By placing the building predominately underground they were also able to preserve one of the defining features of the campus, the great lawn that spans the space between the two existing facilities.

"Lost in Egypt" published in CMH

cmh-egypt.jpg

The July and August issue of CMH just arrived at our studio the other day. I thought that I would mention it because it highlights Brad's trip to Egypt last year to aid COSI in their production of "Lost in Egypt exhibit that is currently open. The article, written by Kelli Gaza Nowinsky, who is the Public Relations Manager at COSI, is primarily an overview of the trip and amazing access that was given to COSI while they were putting the it all together. Which is fine by us, as it serves to be a wonderful vehicle to show off some more of Brad's awesome photography! If you're interested in getting the back story to the production of "Lost in Egypt check out the exhibit's blog that was updated daily while they were in Egypt.

If you happen to be local you can go and grab a free copy of CMH at just about any respectable location; something that we highly recommend doing, because in our opinion the magazine just keeps getting better. Plus so far we're two for two with getting them to publish Brad's photography.

Building Design & Construction Cover!

Levine.jpg

We were just informed by Karlsberger today that one of Brad's shots of Levine Children's Hospital was chosen to be on the cover of this month's issue of Building Design & Construction Magazine. We're very excited that this project is getting the recognition that it deserves. The article cover's some of problems involved in designing a children's hospital, essentially how to make bright, warm and inviting without making it totally cheesy, raising the design but keeping it kid friendly. If you've ever been to the addition that Karlsberger did at Levine I think that we all can agree that it solves the problems involved wonderfully.

To read the article please visit Building Design & Construction's website, where if you notice they use one of Brad's photo as the website's current masthead, as well as featuring to more images of Brad's in the article.

HHMI Janelia Farm Research Campus in Virginia Living

Virgina_Living.jpg

HHMI has just been published in Virginia Living magazine. The article deals with the importance of the work being done there. It's a general overview of the work, nothing too technical. The article is primarily a vehicle to enlighten their readers about the really cool research and work being done in their "backyard's" so to speak. However that being said it's really a very good overview of the work being done there; and highlights how important the advances being made there are to our society.

Unfortunately the magazine doesn't have the article on their website to be read by all. But if you happen to be in Virginia, please stop by the local news stand and pick up an issue; or if you're interested subscription information can be found on their website.

Vinoly in Architectural Lighting Magazine

ArchLighting.jpg

We at the studio were just recently informed that two projects we shot for Rafael Vinoly Architects were featured in November’s Issue of Architectural Lighting. The projects are featured in separate articles and each deals with the unique lighting demands that each project brought to the table.

The article discussing the Center of Science at Bard College deals with the architects desires to remove all but faintest traces of lighting hardware, to light the space in a way that highlighted the architecture, and to do all of this without exceeding the College’s Budget. While the article dealing with California Nano Systems covers the unique challenges of creating a high light level work environment for the scientist and technicians. While at the same time meeting all of California’s rigorous energy efficiency regulations.

To read further on these challenges check out the online articles; since I think it might be hard to find at this point. The article for Bard is here, while the article fore California Nano Systems is here. To find more details, at least architecturally, on each project; or to see what other cool projects their working on please visit Vinoly's website.

Brad is on the Cover of Cupola

Cupola.jpg

Brad's image of James Turrell's Light piece at the Franklin Park Conservatory is on the cover of the latest version of Cupola magazine, the magazine put out by the conservatory. We are pleased to have been a part of such a cool project, as well as to get to meet and work with the artist.

It's almost to easy to take beautiful pictures when you have a project this cool to work with, isn't it? If anybody who's local hasn't gone and seen it, you should because it's very worthwhile and it goes on every night so there's really no excuse. While you're out you should stop by and support the conservatory, because without them the project would have been possible. McCoy Center wins Award!

McCoy_Board.jpg

The Jeanne B. McCoy Center for the Performing Arts, a building by our friends at Westlake Reed Leskosky, has recently won the Peggy Ezekiel Award for Outstanding Achievement in Theatrical Design. We here at the studio are very excited to have been part of such a great project. WRL entered two boards in the United States Institute for Theater Technology (USITT) Ohio Valley Region Conference held last month where they won the award. The boards that they submitted for the award will now join all of the other regional winners to go on National tour.

While we're all waiting to hear if and undoubtably wins its next awards, we want to take the chance and tell everyone that's local here in Columbus to get out and see a show at the theater. To find out what's playing when at the theater please follow the link. If you've got a moment it's always worthwhile to take spin over to WRL's website.

McCoy Center for the Performing Arts, which Brad photographed for Westlake Reed Leskosky, has been featured in the November issue of Stage Directions magazine; the article is featured in the Theater Spaces section, a once monthly are of the magazine that highlights a single specific theater.

The article deals with the conception of the project and how it was designed to blend into the style of surrounding New Albany, as well as to be a platform that can evolve and grow with the community. While the overall design is in harmony with the Georgian theme of New Albany the interior space is specifically designed to be easily used by, and adaptable to all of the community's current and future needs.

Becton Dickinson in Metropolis

BectonDickinson-1.jpg

The RMJM Hillier project that Brad shot earlier this year at the Becton Dickinson Corporate Campus has been published in the latest issue of Metropolis. The article appears in their 'Observed' section and deals with the creative and environmentally conscious way that Hillier solved the problem posed by the project. Becton Dickinson wanted to find a way to unite their two main corporate buildings, which were separated an expanse of open and grassy lawn, with out destroying the pastoral beauty of the campus.

While it wasn't the easiest shoot that Brad has had to do; I think that he walked away with a beautiful series of images for Hillier to use when talking about it's innovative new building. To see what other new and creative problems that the architects at Hillier are working on please visit their website. Architecture & Culture: The Architecture of Science

arch-of-science.jpg

Rafael Vinoly’s office sent a pdf over to us the other day showing us an article featuring their projects and opening with an image of Bard College that Brad took. The article, titled “ The Architecture of Science”, is being run in the Korean version of “Architecture & Culture”. It details how as the lines between the specific specializations within the science industries are beginning to disappear a new form of lab and work space that fosters an inter-disciplinary community is required. The article goes on to say that with recent projects Rafael Vinoly Architects PC has established itself on the cutting edge of a new brand of research lab design.

While we are always very pleased to see our clients get the attention that they deserve through continued publication. We are even happier that the article features several of Brad’s images of Bard College, as well as a few of his images of the California NanoSystems Institute at UC, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and the National Institute of Health.

Unfortunately I couldn’t find the article online, I’ll keep looking for it later and hopefully I’ll find it and will be able to post a link to it. Until then however please visit the website of Rafael Vinoly Architects PC, I know that I enjoy visiting their site and seeing what new and exciting projects that they are working on.
