Architecture & Culture: The Architecture of Science

arch-of-science.jpg

Rafael Vinoly’s office sent a pdf over to us the other day showing us an article featuring their projects and opening with an image of Bard College that Brad took. The article, titled “ The Architecture of Science”, is being run in the Korean version of “Architecture & Culture”. It details how as the lines between the specific specializations within the science industries are beginning to disappear a new form of lab and work space that fosters an inter-disciplinary community is required. The article goes on to say that with recent projects Rafael Vinoly Architects PC has established itself on the cutting edge of a new brand of research lab design.

While we are always very pleased to see our clients get the attention that they deserve through continued publication. We are even happier that the article features several of Brad’s images of Bard College, as well as a few of his images of the California NanoSystems Institute at UC, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and the National Institute of Health.

Unfortunately I couldn’t find the article online, I’ll keep looking for it later and hopefully I’ll find it and will be able to post a link to it. Until then however please visit the website of Rafael Vinoly Architects PC, I know that I enjoy visiting their site and seeing what new and exciting projects that they are working on.

Update: Orphan Works

Attention everyone! That which we thought might happen has happened. All that was seemingly good (at least better) about the new version of the Orphans work bill in Congress right now has been stripped of all protective measures for the copyright holders. As such ASMP has reversed its position and is now, along with APA asking people to write to their representatives to have the bill stopped. To find contact information for your representatives go here. For a sample form letter to send either electronically or conventionally go here. I know that I personally have already taken action and sent both of the senators for Ohio letters urging them to not pass this legislation as it stands. I hope and urge you to do the same. This legislation has no protective measures; no redeeming quality of any kind; and this bill should not be allowed to pass.

A new version of "Orphan Works" in Congress

If you don’t already know there is a new version of the “Orphan Works” law back in Congress. It’s hard, as a creative professional to know where to stand and what side to take on this law. It seems as though it’s splitting our industry in two. APA in conglomeration with other groups has drawn up chain letters that you can read and send to your representative here, also posted on this page are links to information on the law. While APA is against it, ASMP has taken the stance that while the law isn’t perfect it’s far more conciliatory than the 2006 law. Upon viewing the differences (which you can do here)between the two they’ve taken the position that we should be happy with what it is that we got because if we fight it will probably get worse, in terms of the preservation of our rights.

It’s hard to know where to stand on this, all we can do is read the information that’s available to us, and then try and decide where we think our better interests lie. So in the interest of public knowledge we have decided to post the links available to us as members of both organizations. Please take the time and read the information before making up your mind.

AIA Revises it's Best Practices

AIA_BestPractices.jpg

AIA has just recently revised their Best Practices section of their website. Which included updating all of the information contained within the pdf’s. It seems, as though would be quite a bit of work and I’m sure whoever had the pleasure of doing is glad that it’s done. However we are very pleased to have been a part of the process. Brad’s image of the Boston Convention Center, designed by Rafael Vinoly Architects, is being featured on the first page of the section 6.3.08 titled ‘Controlling the Cost of a Photography Assignment’.

We look forward to perusing all of the changes that they made to the pdf’s and gleaming whatever new morsels of knowledge have been added to it. Of particular interest to our clients might be the pdf’s found in Chapter 6, Part 3, Sections 5-9; they deal with how to hire and work with a photographer. It’s always a good idea to get a refresher on how these things are supposed to be done. Please give it a look here, it might not be fun but I’m sure it’ll be educational.
